The all-mighty EARTH

Post by The Boss »

Fuck it. I don't have a job, I'm hemorrhaging money like a fiend - but I just bought tickets to EARTH.

Life is good.

General EARTH thread.

"THRONES AND DOMINIONS" is under-rated as all fuck.

Anyone interested in a fairly in-depth review of the show after I attend? I haven't tried my hand at reviewing before, but I'm sure I could do a decent job.

I'd probably have to take notes during the show, though. That's why I'm asking now - if there's no interest, I'd rather not briefly tap on my phone if I don't have to.

Is this a "doom" band? I think I've heard one of their albums before. Recommend me what you think is their best and I'll give it a whirl.

As for your review, I'd read it.

Right on, brother. Proving once again how cool you are.

Dylan Carlson/EARTH has had two stages, in my mind: Both the substantially obvious drone side, and the more delicate one. I like to think of the latter as "acoustic drone", but I would understand why many would not agree with such a term.

Even as we speak, I'm balls-deep in "EARTH 2". You should probably start there to get a taste of the former development of his work. My first exposure was the gorgeous "EXTRA-CAPSULAR EXTRACTION". I'll give you several internet points if you go into that blind and can tell who is doing vocals.

Primarily, though, EARTH is a vocal-less concept. From, I think, "HEX" onwards, he/they adopted a very stripped-back approach. It's what I'll be expecting when I see them in two weeks, if only so my girlfriend (who is an Islander, if that gives you any perspective on what she's in to) doesn't get droned the fuck out.

EARTH requires opiates or patience. I've done both while listening to the albums, and they work incredibly well. Few bands are as transportive and blissful as this.

Start with the aforementioned, and wander up to the two most recent. Carlson is well-respected for a good reason.

I'm excited for you. When I discovered EARTH, I literally didn't know what to think. At least you've had someone to prepare you.

Gorgeous stuff.

No worries.

Off the top of my head, I would expect "EARTH 2" to be on YouTube.

No. Never a doom band. Electric Wizard are doom. Moss are doom.

Earth were "drone" metal - to begin with. Then, after a period of absence that lasted some seven or eight years (including a stint in both prison and rehab)....there was a stylistic shift to a kind of "Ry Cooder on Quaaludes" sound.

If a newbie you be.....get The Bees Made Honey In The Lion's Skull.

You won't go wrong. Unless of course you are impatient with "slow" music that generally doesn't really go anywhere.

You see, with Earth, there's no "payoff".

But that's what's so good about them.

Cal.

You have returned. Thank you for your input.

I would like to extend the courtesy of me stating that I do not like you, but I do not think that you are worthless.

I look forward to your further input in this forum, but I shall try to refrain from engaging with you in any significant way.

All the best.

A hangover from my Philly friends. "Clutch" is when everything goes together and is awesome.

Mmmm, truth. Makes sense. TMV makes more sense.

I'm big on pretending to think, so EARTH is perfect. Couple that with opiates, and away you go.

As an aside, do you know how fucking hard it is to get a Goddamn fucking Islander into EARTH?!

I deserve a medal for this.
