i seem to remember that the last crop of tours yielded two "new songs." one is the intro to schism - sort of - and there was another one. the intro is alright, but it's this other, second, song that i really loved listening to.
usually a quick search for "tool new song" would bring it up. of course it was toolarchive or someone similar who had it. now i can't find it anywhere. it was about 4 minutes long.
anyone know what i'm talking about? i just messaged toolarchive and will let you know what he says. on the off hand chance someone here actually gives a shit, that is.
ok. that's all i got. peace.

There's a bunch of "new songs" on the Tool Archive Youtube page:
Is it not one of those? The two "new songs" I know of are:

found it!
it's not one of the ones you put up (EDIT: it is, i just didn't scroll down.) - most of those are takes of the schism intro. which, frankly, i can take or leave. i mean it's tool, so i kinda like it. but i kept searchin' and searchin' and finally found it. 2012 it looks like. so not that recent.
here it is:

Those have a more major tonality than all their other stuff. It kinda creeps me out. Is the new Tool album going to be positive? I know they are positive overall, but the music is really critical and brooding. Dealing with harsher energies. Those pieces sound bright and open. I think I'm almost ready for it.

I agree. It the same major tonality in aenema, but more extreme. I think it's really exciting.

While I think the video in question is an accurate barometer of the sounds they're toying with, it is important to remember that various pieces of music there have been shifted a bit to mesh with each other (the "author" explains that in the text area of the youtube video).

I think it's too vague to really imagine the form those parts will actually take, but overall it feels like a higher energy.

The segues fits really well when mashed, I get a warm feeling listening to it. Puts the new stuff in a new perspective really, especially the last bit.
