"In fact, when I first heard about this project (way back when), I mentioned it in a news post as being a "curve ball" - meaning that it would be something unexpected by most Tool fans (as it was to me)"

I guess its a collection of cover songs

A Salival ll track listing of:
Stinkfist ext.
Prison sex o.t.r.m.
Schism (fast middle)
Demon Cleaner
Sober (as it is played live now w/ little nuances )
Rosetta Stone (live, because they would have to have at least one 10k day song on it)
Opiate (with new middle)
just wishing for at least a salival type thing probably just a video packaged thing for opiate, wait and see i guess. ....

I'd be satisfied with a covers album, with Commando and Stranglehold.

I would be more excited for some hi-def live video recordings though, but that seems unlikely, at least for this "curveball".
I would freak for a really well done live collection, especially 10K Days stuff. Even the best sources for that bootleg-wise are pretty shoddy if you go compare it with something like Salival. The best you usually find are IEM Matrixes and the vocals are always WAY too high in the mix, with far too little guitar. I know what you mean though, there are some amazing boots out there. But I would still kill to have official, high-quality live stuff from Lateralus/10K Days era.

I guess it doesn't even take a release... just a newsletter. You guys are riding a self-induced roller-coaster. Hope you're having fun.

Haahaa! What, is Aaron Harris like TOOL's handyman or some shit? Its nice to read Maynerd's jamming with the band. I suspect he writes his parts the way a lot of artists do, by freestyling whatever thoughts and emotions the music digs up and just spitting it out into the mic. Then going back and listening to the recordings (its no secret that they record all their jams at the loft) and piecing it all together into something cohesive. I wonder how much rearranging the band will have to do and if Maynerd's input will take anything in a different direction. By the way, this newsletter is just as cryptic as the rest, its just written in English is all. We already knew Maynerd was getting involved in the writing, we already knew Adam likes the taste of his own foot and we've been aware for the past 5 or so years that the band was working on some "Big Thing" or "curveball" or whatever the fuck. And that Golden Ticket? Well you'd have a better chance of meeting the real Willy Wonka with the thing before you receive whatever prize TOOL have so thoughtfully in store.

Agree 100%... After I read the news letter this arvo, I was stoked to finally get some information that wasn't shrouded in puzzles and misdirection, it was a nice change. Then as you said HB an almost instant tonal change on the forum... Cool...
All of this! ^^^^^

A nice HD full concert DVD/BluRay would be nice just to tide us over until the new stuff is ready.

edit:
it wouldn't hurt my feelings if Danny wanted to come to Houston and jam with his buddy Neil in Neil's side band Rush...

I would be really stoked if that was the curve ball. Having those live songs in great quality would be awesome. I listen to the live APC records more then I listen to the actual records now.

Honestly if the curve ball is an opiate video or a pot video or any music video for the older songs I wouldn't be stoked. All this teasing and speculation and to have it be a video, even if it were a awesome video, I still wouldn't be stoked. I always buy my music from artist I like but I would for fucking sure download the video and not pay a dime for it. I have said it multiple times in this thread that I would be very happy and content if it was like a salival 2 release. I am tired of the quality of the bootlegs that I have. I have the best that's out there and they still don't compare when I put on Third Eye on salival. That song on salival destory's with its power and clean quality sound.

I'd much rather have a Salival II type release than a concert DVD. You watch it once or twice then it sits there collecting dust. And I really hope it's not a stupid music video for The Pot or Opiate.

Agreed. New format coming from Tool - High definition. Blair said that it is something unexpected. We all expect the video. We all expect Salival 2. I think that Problem 8 will be part of whatever it is they are working on. And just for my satisfaction, a live version of Wings/10K Days. That song owned in 2007.

^ for sure! Live DVD is cool and would be cool but I would rather have audio. Also if they were to release a music video I would have preferred them to waste their time on touring the same old songs again then to spend time on putting video on a old song. I would love to give them my money to see those same old songs again. Back in 2009 and 2010 shows I cared about what the play list was. I wanted to add songs from the not heard yet live to heard live. But the 2012 and 2014 shows I had changed and was just so happy to see them live that I didn't care what the set list was.

My only argument against Salival 2 as such, is that it's not much of a curveball. Blind Freddy could see it coming. That's what makes me think it's really not a Salival 2 at all.

Yep. Salival II would not be a curveball by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm going with a covers album

July 2013 newsletter:

"On their next record, the band will include a cover called “From A Dry Camel” by prog-metal pioneers “DUST” from their eponymously titled debut album in 1971. The Tool version will retain the same heavy echo-plex vocals, powerful bass lines, wah-wah pedal guitar lead, and a (very) loud gong intro! TRUE OR FALSE?"

The very next month Blair said that was false. Everything on that T or F list was answered.

Well he said some people guessed right.

Of what's been guessed only a covers album would be close to "curveball-ish".

And APC already did that.

Had this come through my inbox today:
http://atriumofthefall.com/32-2/

We wrote "The Chancellor" as a wake up call to our dear friend Justin. Given the lack of musical creativity on the airwaves today, this song is a first hand account of Justin. Delving deep into his mind and writing it down, The band itself is a Topanga California Band whom wishes to remain private in its membership. Rock out to the song, Justin and his wife Shelly, got a kick out of it... Tool will be back soon
Not sure if it's legit, or if it's just some band trying to drum up some free publicity. Either way, the song doesn't do a great deal for me.

That's what I am kind of afraid of and don't want to get my hopes up at all. Just expressing what I would like, but of course we all know Tool doesn't give a shit what the fans think. I am not saying that's a bad thing either.

I know. It doesn't mean it couldn't be another song by dust though. Or any band for that matter. My point is, very shortly after the 'curveball' was announced, he brought up the subject of covers with this statement in the July newsletter. Coincidence... Maybe... Maybe not

Maybe whoever guessed it right was someone who has emailed him. Blair says that it was even unexpected to him. Salival 2 would be expected, but it's possible that what is within the packaging will be unexpected. I still believe that the new instrumental with Opiate is for the new album. It does not sound right together. I think that "change of pace" is more of a changeup than a curveball in baseball terms. Possibly acoustic tracks, which would be both unexpected and a change of pace. So we get a mixed bag of goodies that resembles Salival, but is unexpected.

Bluray Audio and Pono formats:

Problem 8
Stinkfist Acoustic
Jambi Live
The God Machine cover
Right in Two Acoustic
King Crimson cover
Schism Live
The Patient Acoustic
Dust cover
The Grudge Live
Opiate video 3D
The Pot video 3D

If I am even close to guessing that right, I may change occupations. I would love to hear Tool acoustic with Danny on tablas.
