Maynard's Lyrics/Maynardisms

Post by inspiration_tactic »

I thought it would be interesting to see what little bits of Maynard's lyrical library you find yourself identifying with the most, appreciating, or becoming inspired by. I'm not talking about the whole song, but mainly a section, a couple of lines, or a couple of words... Maybe something he said in an interview or between songs stuck with you. I like to hear different people's interpretations of his lyrics or how they've applied it to something over the years. I often find myself overlooking pieces of songs in anticipation of the parts that I like, so with a little context we may be able to discover something new about a song we've heard countless times. His ability to blend sarcasm and humor with pretty weighty subject matter in a meaningful manner obviously makes for a wide diversity of interpretation.

Repugnant is a creature who would squander the ability to lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here.

And you will come to find that we are all one mind
Capable of all that's imagined and all conceivable.
Just let the light touch you
And let the words spill through
And let them pass right through
Bringing out our hope and reason

this one sticks with me, very hopeful and optimistic :)

I have to agree. It's one of his more poignant lyrics.

On an old bootleg of an Opiate song (don't remember which) , he told a story of how Elvis is the mother (literally) of Morrisey. Anyone ever hear it? Quite strange.

You're such an inspiration for the ways that I'll never ever choose to be.

Great turn of a phrase.

So many of his lyrics are lent impact from the supporting music (and vice versa) that it's hard to disassociate them. Fairly obvious statement, but it's truer for Tool than most bands.

actually it seems that my fav lyrics come from the album lateralus, with the 2 I already mentioned I can think of a few lines from parabol/parabola.....I dont know if many people talk about the transition lyrically from album to album....but yes lyric wise and I suppose the album in general- lateralus is my fav

Won't you come just a bit closer,
Close enough so I can smell you.
I need you to feel this.

Yeah, I've said shit like this before myself.

I remember Timmy and Sally....
'It is time for us to be doing what we have been doing every day. And that time is now'

Actual quote from Kamala Harris

I love that line... obviously the way it's said heightens the impact. He seems to have a lot of circular lyrics; one line bleeds into the next a lot in parabol/parabola.

I've always been amused by

one and one, are one; eleven

Stinkfist has a lot of great lines

boredom's not a burden anyone should bear

Desensitized to everything, what became of subtlety

I'll keep digging, till I feel something

I like Jambi's take. Isn't it named Jambi partially due to a couple of verses being in Iambic pentameter?

When he compared having King Crimson open for them to having Led Zeppelin open up for Lenny Kravitz and Debbie for Britney, priceless

Flood has a few great lines

All I knew
All I believed
Are crumbling images
That no longer comfort me

This ground is not the rock I'd
Thought it to be

I think anyone that's had an existential conundrum in their experience can relate to those words.
