Doing a little experiment today I listened to both Lateralus and 10,000 days on my shitty work computer.

During Lateralus, when the quiet parts let way for loud parts, there was a noticeable difference in volume.

With 10,000 days, it stayed the same.

read tyson's post. the lyrics came to mind, maybe because the pacing he wrote with. maybe it was the soul-crushing, cubicle-enclosed desperation i pictured him struggling with.

but everything lined up nicely.

Hopefully the next album is a superior product to everything they've done before, and "10,000 DAYS" will largely be ignored for the embarrassment that it is.

It's only an embarrassment to certain fans. I doubt the band feel embarrassed about it in the slightest.

I'd say the production was an embarrassment, Tool seemed to always have unique production, on 10,000 days it sounded like any other major metal band release, they used to lead in production, on 10,000 days, they followed.

Other than that, no embarrassment, just sub par compared to their previous two releases.

Right in Two was the only song for me that hit the heights of them.

Production, and recycled ideas - not to mention some truly cringe-inducing lyrics and average musicianship.

As I've said before, it would be a really good album for any other band. For TOOL, it was a horrible regression, and I suspect time will prove it to be a blemish in their catalogue.

this is not a lyric driven band anymore and hasn't been for quite some time. but let's not let that muddy the fact that the album had very good production. come on now fellas.

None of the Tool albums are shining examples of great production in my opinion, so saying 10k Days is terrible (which is isn't, nor is it amazing) seems like a waste of time.

Are you fucking high? Bottrill got Aenima and Lateralus damn near perfect.

Barresi intentionally kept 10k loud. He wanted to try to re-capture that dynamic that was present on Undertow. He specifically said he wanted the guitar out in front a bit more. That was why they didn't want Ludwig to fuck around with the sound much during mastering. The problem with 10k isn't the production. The album lacks any kind of flow and The Pot is a fucking mess of a song. Beyond that 10K is a solid album.
