How will Tool approach the design of the new album?

dont forget who were talking about here... its tool... its adam jones. Arent adam and alex friends, or at the very least regular acquaintances?? they still promote alex grey shows on toolband.com. i dont think its that crazy to think they his accident would slow writing. If one of my friends was in a terrible accident i think i might take some time off work, especially if my only job was to write music, and i didnt have a boss telling me what to do

Even if their relationship was close enough that he'd bother taking time off (I don't imagine it is, especially considering they live opposite sides of the US), I can't see any reason why it would be more than a couple of days.

well the question was pretty much what stops the writing... Adam said that life gets in the way and they have a few medical emercengies, one of which was very serious but is now ok and everyone is ok... then a few minutes later he states Alex Grey wrecked his car, not saying they are the same event, but it suuuuure seemed that way

Didn't seem that way to me. It sounded like it was a medical issue relating directly to one of the 4 band members. (Unlikely Maynard because they don't seem to be close and that wouldn't have slowed the writing process). Danny had his bike crash but that wasn't it. CBA to speculate, but it did sound like it affected them quite significantly. I also doubt it was Adam, because that would have been pretty odd for him to talk about it in the 3rd person.

This list doesnt really take into the fact that when composed, songs like D/R/T were actually only 1 song. (ie. lost keys/rosetta stoned, parabol/a, etc...)

So on average their albums have about 9 REAL songs...
Danny has already mentioned a 23 minute piece that they are working on. This will likely be broken up into at least 2 songs, potentially 3...leaving them with really only 6-7 songs left to compose for the album, plus all the filler stuff, but like i said im not counting that. And thats 6-7 individual songs, which in classic Tool fashion will be composed of 4 or so "larger" songs. The songs they create then break into 2 pieces, like Parabol/a and Wings series. My guess is the album will be set up something like this...

1. Heavy intro track (The Grudge, Vicarious, Stinkfist)
2. White Noise Filler track
3. Radio single song.
4. Part of a 2 piece song track
5. Second part of track 4
6. Segue filler track
7. Part 1 of 23 minute piece
8. Part 2 of 23 minute piece
9. Part 3 of 23 minute piece
10. Noise, or instrumental (Viginti Tres, Disgustipated, Faaip de Oiad)
