How many times TOOL songs have been played

Post by iloveposters »

This idea came from another thread. I found it quite interesting which songs TOOL has chosen to play and how often they were/are played. I've been fortunate enough to catch some rarities (T&L, Undertow, Eulogy, Pushit) and I'm sure many of you have as well. I also saw the Schism music video as they showed it during a brief intermission in NYC on the Lateralus mini tour.

The overwhelmingly obvious TOOL staples appear to be Sober, Stinkfist (wow 665x), 46+2, Aenema, Schism, Lateralus, and Jambi.

I do expect some inaccuracies, as I am pretty sure (-)Ions has been played a ton more than 101 times. Feel free to discuss.

According to setlist.fm TOOL has played 898 times. I believe setlist.fm doesn't have every show they have ever played, just as distortiononline doesn't either.

I wonder how many times us fans have listened to the songs in comparison to how many times the band has played them live??

I believe a fan/fans were disrespectful towards maynard or that maynard felt like fans were disrespecting him during wings for marie and he walked off stage after wings

I'm fairly sure it's never been played, and If it was it would probably have been only once or twice, and I've forgotten it happened.
Danny playing samples of a Jacob's Ladder for 10-15 seconds doesn't qualify as "(-) ions", to me.

In 1996, at the start of the "Ænima" tour, we loaded some sheets of tin and some 5' tall Jacob's Ladders out of the Loft and into the truck with the intent of them actually performing "(-) ions" on stage at some point during the tour. I don't remember them ever being used.
I also don't recall Danny's Jacob's Ladders samples ever being listed on an actual setlist, nor referred to by anyone on the tour as "(-) ions". That was simply mis-reported by concertgoers (much the case with the recent "B-Boom" reports, or saying Adam teased "Prison Sex" simply because he scraped his strings for a second or 2).
If, by chance, someone produces a photo of a setlist with it in writing, then I stand corrected. However, I still feel the actual song "(-) ions" has never been performed live.

Also, the South Park "Spirit of Christmas" was shown twice during that tour.
First at the Hutridge Theatre in Las Vegas, then at Universal Amphitheatre, 2 days later.

I think they may just be confusing the "electrical" sounding intro to Stinkfist and Hooker back in the day with (-)Ions.

You know the one, sounds pretty much like the electricity parts in it, but it only goes on for 30 seconds or so.

EDIT: Like this:

First of all, thank you for your corrections, and for explaining in detail that the band had indeed expected to perform (-) ions as it appeared on the studio album.

I, just like Ravenpig, assumed the 'electrical sound' (example in the video embedded in Ravenpigs post) played before Stinkfist and HWAP was indeed a shortened version of (-)ions, and therefore since Stinkfist has been performed well over 100 times, that (-)ions has been performed well over 100 times as well.

Junior, would you be able to inform us what infact the 'electrical sound' played in the example of the video actually is? I have no idea what a 5' Jacob's Ladder is. Many thanks!

It can refer to a LOT of things, one of them being the
song by prog rock God's, RUSH!

However, in this case look under 'miscellaneous'
and I am sure you will find your answer

A Jacob's Ladder is an electrical device made from a transformer (often from a neon sign) and 2 metal rods. Rising arcs of electricity between the rods are the result, and they make a "bzzzp" sound as they rise. They were commonly seen in a lot of old sci-fi movies. They can be kinda dangerous.
It's what they used to make the sounds that are found in "(-) ions", and the samples that Danny plays are likely from the same recording session, so the confusion isn't completely unfounded. I just don't consider it to be an actual performance of the song since there are many other parts to that piece besides the 'bzzzp" noises.

Here's a video I found about the construction of a Jacob's Ladder.

Thanks again Junior for your contribution and clarification. I think that the 'bzzzp' sounds can be easily confused by concert goer's even though it is does not include the tin foil and cookie sheets to be considered to be '(-)ions'. Interesting to know that the band at one time or another considered playing the song live as heard on the studio album. I appreciate these little 'unknowns' that you have share with the FourthEye community. If there are any other inaccuracies or input you can add to the discussion on how often or why certain songs/videos played that would be greatly appreciated.

We do the best we can. Obviously the Opiate and Undertow songs have been played way more than what that breakdown shows. The problem is that pre-1998 there are a bunch of Tool shows with no documented setlist. Over the years we've scoured the internet for information on these missing shows with no luck. You can blame me for the (-) ions thing. I don't think that a quick tease of (-) ions as an intro to Stinkfist justifies it being listed, just like every other intro or jam Tool does play (aside from Merkaba.) As Junior said, they've never actually played the whole thing. Eventually I would like to go back and remove it entirely from the tour journal.
