I'm enjoying the album for the most part after I gave it a good spin with headphones. Am really glad I didn't give much time to the songs pre release date so I could digest it all at once and agree with eat the elephant as an opener too. Think it will work great.

I still can't get past Hourglass though. Maynard does not require synth effect. Have never been a fan when anyone uses it but feels especially out of place on this album.

There were eggs in the fried rice. You don't know what you're missing.

Eat the Elephant's..."Delicious"...tell me what your thoughts, interpretations, complaints, etc. are. It's the only song I don't "get" so anything to help me out is appreciated.

It's got the best guitar solo on the album. I like Delicious, one of the best tracks on the album. Maynard sounds quite different on the chorus parts of the songs, and it works pretty well

Other than that it's a pretty straight up rock song.

Delicious is probably my favourite track on the record, as for interpretation of the lyrics it suggests to me Maynard condemning those who say ridiculous hateful shit on the internet with no regard for their fellow man and than being outed as the piece of shit you are and facing real life consequences.

Just a guess.

That's a good interpretation... I jumped to the easy one of it being about Trump... much the same as The Contrarian and The Doomed.

Agreed... Delicious is my fave also.

I've been too focused on his singing (quite different indeed) and wasn't really paying attention to the guitar work. Thanks for that!

Woah, right on! I get that now.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'll definitely have these in mind on future listens. Much appreciated.

^ Ah, looking forward to listening/watching this, but first...

Regarding that guitar in "Delicious" again, there's a bit of it that brings to mind Pink Floyd's "Fearless." "Fearless" is far more laid back and meandering, but there's some small part in that chord progression that APC is channelling.

Yep agreed. Not a particularly big fan of theneedledrop (Anthony Fantano or however you spell his name), although I do give give him credit for reviewing a fairly diverse cross section of genres and styles of music. He did nail this review however. His breakdown of the problems with Delicious, Hourglass, Eat the Elephant, DLB and Get the Lead Out are completely spot on.

Not to derail this thread, but here's Low's cover of the song. I really enjoy this version too.

Well here is my two cents:

Heard it last Friday when it came out and I was... whelmed. It wasn’t bad or anything but it did nothing for me. I did think that ol’ May Jay sounds really good.

So I didn’t hear it again until yesterday and I did like it more, there are a few pretty cool moments. I like the opening track and Feathers is much better on the album than when I heard it live. Disillusioned and DLB (I think?) work well back to back.
It’s certainly miles ahead of Emotive, however much or little that may mean.

However, this album doesn’t have THAT moment for me. The moment where something jumps up and bites you and the album roars all the way to the end. In Mer it was the second where the guitar howls in Magdalena, in 13th it’s right at the start. This one doesn’t have that.. just a bunch of “that’s cool” moments. But hey, May Jay sounds great... good sign for Tool.

6.5 out of 10

Definitely a grower for me. Many of the "WTF is this" moments I have on the first listen have gelled a bit for me. It's no classic by any means, but I reckon I'd give it a solid 7/10

I'm trying to refrain from saying anything more negative about this album, but I need to get one more issue I have off my chest: That vocoder in Hourglass is not good......not good at all.

It sounds like a combination of Man Overboard and System of a Down's Old School Hollywood. :?

^ EXACTLY!!!! Old school Hollywood was my thoughts as soon as I heard it. That song brings the album down massively for me and I think is the biggest reason Puscifer comparisons are being made. It reminds me of man overboard for some reason and just doesn't fit with the rest of the album for me.
