Damn, now that I've heard a more complete version with Maynard's vocals, I gotta say that is dope stuff. It's trippy too. If it's a sign of what's to come then I'm hyped.
I like the vibe of this but isn't it, the guitar at least, more or less an exact mash-up of the Lateralus and Right in Two opening guitar lines?
Most all Tool songs are in D minor. I wouldn't call it a mash up as much as, just being similar.
This. I'll give you (ZUG) that part of Descending does sound a lot like a riff from Lateralus though. But it's funny because I've been reading the comments for these new jams for awhile now, and people always think they sound like old Tool songs. But they can never agree on what Tool song. One person will say it sounds like Rosetta Stoned, one will say the Patient, another Lateralus, etc. All for one jam.

Personally, in terms of the feeling that I get, this jam sounds more like Wings or Reflection to me in that it is more meditative and surreal. I love it. I remember quotes from Danny and what not about how heavy some of the new songs are going to be, so the thought of that stuff in contrast with this has me really excited.

Also, people shit on Maynard saying he is the least important member of the group, but those beautiful chant-like vocals add a whole new dimension to this song that ties everything together perfectly.

I don't see how anyone can say Maynard is the least important. Especially, when the vocals for this descending track really make it interesting.

I don't know if it's just me, but I feel pressured around Tool fans to keep any praise for Maynard to a minimum. As if praising Maynard is "uncool". Fuck that, the dude rocks.

I think it is more like keeping the "Maynard is god" praise to a minimum. Nobody likes a Nardo Zombie. He is a genius and a master at his craft and we all love him...we also love to hate him for being a dick.

Saying May Jay is God is stupid, because we all know it's actually Danny who's God.

I actually preferred the instrumental without his chanting vocals. For me they didn't add anything to the emotion of the music, they just distracted from it. I'm hoping he does something different on the album.

I can guarantee the vocals will be different on the album. He was just chanting with the music.

@Bell:I hope he doesn't. To me it seems like a well thought out melody that intertwines with what the other guys are doing. If anything I hope it just becomes more polished.
@Bill: I don't think Maynard is the type of person to "just chant" over stuff. If that were the case then he would have been doing this all along. Maynard is a godly lyricist and all, but sometimes it's nice to just hear some creative vocalization. The effect is more archetypal.

Yeah, you're right. Maynard has never improvised lyrics over Tool songs............................................Are you trolling or serious?

What? Improvised lyrics is one thing. Entire melodies? Can you show me something like that?

I'm just making a point that Maynard is the type to "chant" over that song. This is going to freak you out when I tell you this, but the music for that jam is going to sound differently on the album as well.

Be that as it may, this is still a great jam. The musicianship is rich and complex. That little proggy polyrhythm ending is incredible. If you don't like it that's cool but I've listened to it a dozen times.
