We spent the entire day on the lawn, and only went to our seats in the loge section during the break between Primus and Tool. We weren't that concerned with getting a great view, just looking for a nice place to stretch out and relax because of the heat. No issues with the sound at all.

By the time we left the lawn it was nice and packed with people, and it looked like those that got there early and held their ground had a better view of the stage. If there was any issue with seeing the stage, all you really needed to do was back up the hill a bit.

A few other comments:

The Melvins were awesome. Everyone should get a chance to hear "Sacrifice" live. Just so good.

Clutch delivered as well. A great energy coming from those guys.

I saw this back in 1996, with Dale on guitar and some young girl on drums. It was bizarre. Buzzo was ranting about how much he "hated" Primus.

Clutch delivered as well. A great energy coming from those guys.

I don't think Buzzo really hates anyone. He likes to take the piss quite heavily though. There's a photo of Buzz + most of the guys from Primus, so I doubt they're really sworn enemies or anything.

I have a new appreciation for Clutch. Although, now that I think about it a bit more, it may have to do more with that girl in white jeans and long blonde hair walking down from the top of the lawn as they started playing. Oh, did I forget to mention that she was shirtless, with colorful flower paisties covering the nipples & areolas of her perfect chest? She was absolutely gorgeous, and that image of her casually walking down the hill as the music started playing will be burned in my brain for a long while. :D

Primus seems like a band Buzz would be into tbh.

A few days late post, but anyway.
Saw Tool in San Jose and Sacramento. Both amazing shows, Tool always delivers. For San Jose I had lower bowl seat to the right, for Sacramento I had floor seats. It was cool to get the two locations. The lower bowl I could se the band clearly so I watched them a lot, and the floor I got the whole visual experience. It was my first time in a long time seeing Tool at in giant indoor sports arena. Usually has been The Bill Graham or Reno Events Center, which are smaller (for Tool's size) venues.
Sacramento started 30 mins earlier than scheduled time on the ticket. So the Crystal Method ended at 8, which was the listed door time. Tool started at 8:30. Bummer for people who showed up late. Must have high curfew fees or something.
I was right by this tall dude who dressed as Jesus. He was very trashed before the show started. Lots of people were taking pictures with him. He ended up being kicked out of the show, escorted by the cops. I wasn't looking at his too much during the set, I don't like to spend timing looking at the security drama during a show. But my friends did, and said he broke a chair at one point. Interesting. It was 100 degrees in Sacramento that day, so I bet the dude was day drinking, not drinking waters and just got too fucked up.
But anyway, always love seeing Tool. Until next time!

Thanks for sharing this. Always fun to read about other's experiences.

We only encountered one person who seemed to be having issues keeping it together, or maybe he just really loved Primus. :D

Dancing around, laying on the ground, flopping around, filling his mouth with water and spitting it out like a water fountain. He danced off after a few minutes, then another few minutes passed and he danced by us again. This time his shoes were off and in his hands.

I'm finally home after my long weekend adventure to see Tool live for the first time, and have to post a review of the experience!

First and foremost, it was absolutely amazing from beginning to end! From the moment we turned onto the street, me and my friends knew we were in for something special. I'm not sure what the numbers were, but it definitely felt like 60 thousand people were in attendance, and the energy was insane. I've heard mixed things about fans at Tool concert, but the crowd to me was beautiful. An eclectic and positive bunch through and through.

I was actually pretty exhausted for the show, having had little sleep all weekend, but I was still able to enjoy the experience. The entire feeling of the venue changed when the band members walked on stage, and I was filled with psychedelic wonder. In terms of the show's quality, it was perfect both sonically and visually. Maynard was chatty and was clearly enjoying himself. His speeches were great, and me and my friends memed the fuck out of them all weekend long. The songs themselves were mind blowing, as was expected. I had no problems with the lack of new information and was just grateful to be apart of the experience. I'm seeing now a lot of anger from people who weren't at the show because nothing "special" happened, but being angry at a show that you weren't even present for is absurd to me now. There is so much that happens at these events that can't be captured by a youtube video.

The highlights of the night for me were the little intros and segues that I had never heard before. In particular, there was an intro to a song (which I unfortunately can't remember which song it was for, nor can I find videos on youtube) that made me go completely agape. It was subtle, yet compelling. It gave me the impression of an eldritch being waking from ancient slumber. Way cool. Danny's drum solo was surprisingly amazing to me, as I haven't been a big fan of his live solos in the past. I'm not sure if it's because I was there live, or if it's because this was was just different, but either way it was amazing. The sound that was complimenting him was also very, very cool. Another moment that awed me was during the opiate extension, when Adam was doing some new tricks. All in all, it's moments like these that give me complete confidence that their next album will be filled with a plethora of unique sounds to blow my mind away.

I have to mention the reaction my friends had. There were three of them, and they were all, for the most part, very casual fans, if that. But they all said that this was the best concert that they had every been to. They all also mentioned how psychedelic it was. We only had some marijuana with us, but they all said that they felt like they had taken something much heavier because of how trippy the concert was.

As a criticism, I do have to say that it's very unfortunate that Maynard can't scream like he used to. There were only a few screams throughout the entire show. The most notable one was for Third Eye, but that was heavily supported with distortion. What I would give to hear Maynard scream the final note The Pot. But he was still amazing to listen to. One of my friends couldn't take his eyes off of Maynard's movements for most of the show. Maynard also took a subtle yet profound pose at the very end of the concert that left a powerful impression on me.

In regards to the aftershow, I knew before hand that leaving the parking lot was going to take forever, so me and my friends were prepared for it, and we made the best of the situation. In fact, I found the aftershow to be beautiful in many ways. I'm sure there were thousands of people who were cursing at the traffic for hours, but there were also many people who were content, and even some who had fun with it. Many groups were just calmly seated in the lot in chairs or in trucks, chatting away as if they were camping. Other people brought fireworks. We even saw somebody fire twirling. I know now that embracing the chaos is the way to go, and I plan to just that next time.

So, overall, it was an amazing show, and I had one of the best weekends of my life. I'm now a Tool show addict, and plan on seeing them every chance I get! It's a shame that I didn't get to meetup with any of the members here, (like nxrm, who seems super cool) but hopefully I'll be able to next time.

^Thanks for the kind words, and so glad to hear you and your pals had a great time, especially as this was your first Tool show. What a great first Tool experience.

I took an hour and half long nap after the show, and then drove my friends home once the traffic started moving. A long day/night indeed, but one that was incredibly memorable.

*And, hopefully we can meet up the next time they come back to town.

Wow. Talk about an all-around fucking fun day. Like norm and other's have said, going into this I checked any/all expectations at the door and just enjoyed the day.

We got their around 1ish and tailgated in the parking lot with some friends, met up with Norm and his posse (thank you again for the awesome, brow wiping bandana. it came in handy more than once. and i hope you all weren't to, uh, lethargic during the day), and made some new friends. Funny thing about tailgating is the venue website says tailgating is a no-go but everyone was doing just that. Can't go wrong with good friends, good brew, and good food prior to any show.

The show actually started before the doors even opened. Up on the mountainside there was a fire (from the vip parking lot you could see some of the flames) and we got to watch Cal Fire come in and handle it. All types of aerial equipment was used and the highlight was the DC-10 flying just a couple of hundred feet right over us before dropping a butt-ton of fire retardant on the hillside. It was my first time seeing that happen, live, and it was pretty impressive.

We actually ended up heading inside around 3ish and from the vip parking lot it was seriously a 1-minute walk to get into the venue. Totally worth the extra $10. By the time we all hit up the potty and got some beverages, parted ways with our friends we ended up missing probably about 1/2 of Fantomas' set. Can't really say anything good or bad about 'em other than I was definitely more impressed than I would've thought by what I heard. Get to add them to the list of bands I've seen.

I'll also add, before I forget, that I was really digging on The Crystal Method playing in between sets. I liked it a lot and definitely is better than random, generic radio music playing between sets.

We stuck around for the first 3/4's of The Melvin's set and there were a few songs I kinda recognized and more that I didn't. Again, over all impressed and like above now I get to add them to the list of musical acts I've seen. It was funny when my wife asked me which one up on stage was Buzz and I told her the dude with the big head of hair and she goes, "Yeah, he looks like he'd go by Buzz."

When we bailed it was so we could hit up the merch tent where we scored a couple of tool concert shirts, a poster and I had to also nab a Clutch shirt.

After hitting up the merch table we met back up with our friends for another round of beverages. We had previously discussed moving down and sitting with our friends in the orchestra seating but once we got to our seats we decided we liked being up higher as it'd give us a better view of all the lazers and lightshow that we knew were upcoming later (and we made the right call). Around this time I also randomly ran into Jose (who used to post on here and TA for a good while) in the beer line. It was a funny encounter and good to see yet another familiar face.

Clutch ended up coming on a few minutes earlier than scheduled and because of it I missed their first song. Once I realized they were on I bid a quick farewell to my wife and our friends and made haste back to our seats. Ho Lee Fuck. These dude's are simply bad mamajama's. They play some kick-ass rock and roll and just blew the doors off the place. I really can't describe how much I enjoyed these guys set. They bring a lot of energy. About 1/2 through their set I realize that my wife still hasn't made her way back and I'm like "well, her loss" only I look over 1 section to my right and I see her rocking out. Turns out I was getting down to the tunes so much I didn't realize I was in the wrong seat. Whoops! These guys set a high bar (that at the time I didn't think even Tool would be able to match).

After Clutch we sat down and had a bunch of snacks. This venue really is pretty cool, in that regard. They let you bring in 2 water bottles and a big bag of food. It felt good to re-hydrate and get some more food in our bellies before Primus came on. Plus by now the sun had really started to set and lower the temperatures a bit.

Like I said last time they played with Tool, I only know a handful of Primus songs (a few more now since the last time we saw them) but both time's I've seen them I've really really enjoyed their show. And I was able to even get, I guess, a new perspective on "My Name is Mud." So I got that going for me, which is nice.

After Primus it was time for one last potty-break and beverage refill before those jerk-asses from Tool came on. They actually ended up coming on maybe 10 minutes late (maybe someone was stuck on the crapper or something). But, man, they opened up with The Grudge and it was amazing. I'll never tire hearing (especially live) the whole "sinking deeper.......<insert kick ass rock here> bit. I remember after the last time I saw them in S.D. that after Parabol/Parabola and Opaite they kinda, to me, seemed to go into autopilot with the "usual" tour songs. This time I definitely didn't get that vibe at all. Always enjoy the extended Schism bit and it seemed as though they've added a 2nd extended bit to Opiate. 3rd eye, Sweat and The Pot were all very much welcomed surprises. And luckily, too, we didn't even get an intermission. Just rocking out for a good long while.

Highlights for me were definitely The Grudge, Descending, The Pot, DC's solo in 46/2, Sweat, 3rd Eye, ah fuck it, simply the whole show.

I'll also add that these guys' stage-show is on fucking point. They continue to evolve with the background screens and lazers and lights (shout out and knob-gobble to Junior for a really good job) and the whole production is, just wow. There were a few times I found myself kinda just looking around at the whole stage-show and murmuring "what the fuck!?!?" There were also a few times where I'd just turn around and soak up the entire crowd up on the hill and it was kinda hippy-neat to see so many people all kinda focusing on the same thing. As mentioned before, the entire day seemed to have this really-positive-energy-vibe going. Getting back to the visuals, I also really, really liked the whole pyramid and burning sun kinda-deal they had going for Descending. The visuals during Danny's drum solo in 46/2 and were really cool where it was kinda like all this chakra, sacred geometry, mystical energy was being transferred from him directly to the video monitor behind him.

I've read some complaints about the same-old same-old set list and the whole "nothing special" for this show or how Maynard doesn't do the long scream in The Grudge or even the not singing the final "vicariously i live...." in Vicarious (even last time I think I poo-poo'd it as him being too cool for school) but this show, for me, left me with nothing to complain about. I dunno if it was because of just how nice their set was or all the other acts we saw or a combination but the day was pretty close to perfect, as far as I'm concerned and I got way more than my money's worth. No question.

After the show we just were able to finally sit down in our seats and really kinda, for the first time that day, just really absorb everything that we had seen/heard. We stayed their until they essentially kicked us out and we made our way to the car. Yeah the parking lot was nuts (another big complaint I've read) but what do people expect when 60,000+ people are all leaving the same place, at the same time with 3 (sometimes 2 or even just 1) lane of traffic all going in the same direction? So we took a nice 3 hour nap, woke up and were able to get right on the road and were home 15 minutes later.

All in all, after Saturday I'm still more than happy to give these guys a couple hundred of my dollars to see them every 14-15 months. No qualms at all and as mentioned above, I was definitely just fortunate to be a part of the experience.

^same! You nailed that review.
I'm also with you that I thought the crystal method was different and pretty cool to do in between sets, especially between primus and tool just added to the excitement!

And yes Adam was throwing some unique stuff in there and the guys were just nailing it! Maynard on parabola killed it belting out "ALIIIIVE!!!" So clean! All of them on point, visual and lights (yes you Junior!) Were for lack of a better term amazing!

Being in the lawn was a unique experience especially during aenema were the lasers fell and shook in a way that felt like there was ground breaking and crumbling from above us and then just having them continually drop with the build up sucking us down! In awe, in fucking awe.
Stellar performance you guys!

^Yes, exactly. As I commented on the front page, the criticism I’ve read about the show is just perplexing. I thought the guys were focused, the music was tight, the lighting and video work was enthralling, and there was an intense energy throughout the entire set. I can only hope all future Tool shows I get to see are impressive as this one was.

Even the "worst" or "most redundant setlist" shows I've seen from Tool have left me giddy beyond belief walking out of the arena. Always.

Very long story short... The trip was great, 14 days away seems like 24 hours looking back. Drove almost 3k miles, went from Vancouver to Tijuana zizaging across the Pacific coast. TOOL was amazing as expected, they brought it every night.

Highlights of the trip were

The Gorge, such a wonderful place to see a show.

Lake Tahoe, stayed at a campsite at Emerald Bay. Just BEAUTIFUL

Ganja Goddess in Seattle 50 bucks for 12 pre rolls.

Jalama Bay about 3 hours west of Santa Barbara. One of the best secluded beaches I have ever been to.

And finally getting to see my favourite band play 5 times in 10 days.

I was fortunate enough to meet some great people throughout my journey. Kittan and the chill come to mind.

That reminds me what was that Aussie's name that drank the acid water. @thechill

^muahahaha I don't remember his name. Funny fucker and nice guy. Crazy he flew all the way from Australia just to see Tool. The show was great and the opening bands really made it tons better as well. Can't thank you enough, lachrymologist, the box seats were amazing and the VIP area save my ass from getting heat stroke and burned. Hahaha
