I like the melodic metal side of Mastodon.

Oooooooh, tough question, as it's one I've been thinking about recently since I've been going through their catalog while I'm at the gym.

One one hand, their earlier stuff is pretty heavy/metalish but there's more of the cookie-monster singing.  Their more recent stuff, as Kat put it is kinda more melodic metal and has less cookie-monster singing.

Tough choice but I may have to go with "Leviathan" though that's subject to change in days/weeks/months.

Also, why didn't you include "Call of the Mastodon" in your poll?  B/c it's kinda a re-release of "Lifesblood" plus a few other songs?

Fuck.

If that's your choice, I guess just leave a post saying so.

Crack the Skye is not only my favourite Mastodon albums, but one of my fav all time prog albums.

Well I imagine Leviathan will win by a country mile.  All their records are decent though.  My least favourite would be Crack The Skye, but its not a bad album by any stretch.

Mastodon need to do an Australia tour - I think they're yet to do one that wasn't as a support band or as part of a festival.

I am lucky enough to live in their hometown and we get to see them around town quite often.  A lot of nights, we can find Brent at El Myr or Brann checking out Mastodon tee's at Junkman's Daughter.  Brent's side project Fiend w/out a Face played at the Days of the Dead Con (horror convention) recently.  We always seem to find him at Dragon*con.

Crack The Skye. I was disappointing when The Hunter came out and the longest song was only like 6 minutes. Regardless, I like all of their albums. Mastodon fucking ROCKS. The Last Baron, This Mortal Soil and Colony of Birchmen are some of my favorite songs from them.

yes do... but don't get turned off if you're not into the heaviness and/or vox... everything else has gotten softer and less compelling ever since.  Not to say they're not a good band, but the last couple didn't quite do it for me, personally.

Whatever you do, don't start with The Hunter.  It barely even resembles the Mastodon I grew to know.

That's a really tough question, as they change so much and evolve with each album. I'd say Leviathan or Crack The Skye if I'm looking at it in "complete album" terms. But Blood Mountain and The Hunter also contain some of the best Mastodon songs written, in my opinion, so it's tough. I'll go with Crack The Skye today.

I ended up hearing Leviathan, pretty, prettyy, prettyyyy good, other than a couple spots where the singer got really fucking annoying. No big whoop. The songs were also way shorter than I thought they were gonna be except for the one.

I will give Crack the Skye a shot next.
