Not being someone who usually gives a toss if some celeb dies I have to say this makes me so sad. One of my absolute favorites and his acoustic solo gig will forever be one of my most memorable concert experiences.

Isn't the news just a ridiculous concept now. Fuck the state of our media, or should I say social media because that more than anything else has reduced journalism to a pile of shit.

True , Chris' followers increased by thousand after the news of his passing.

RIP Chris Cornell , soundgarden was the second band i started listening to in high school after black sabbath back in the late 90's. Such a talent and a great voice, better than all of those 90's rock bands frontmen including mjk.

edit : Hellboy ,moving words and a great tribute on the homepage.

Slaves & Bulldozers (w/ "In My Time of Dying" refrain)

Meet me, Jesus, meet me

Meet me in the middle of the air

If my wings should fail me, Lord

Please meet me with another pair

Well, well, well, so I can die easy

Jesus, going to make up my dying bed

Damn, what a shame. He had one of the greatest voices in rock music. Soundgarden were here just one week ago and I regret not going now.

Awful news.... Some new out there saying authorities responded to a man who had commited suicide, in detroit, with the same birthday as Chris, but no name was released? Very confusing.

Mr. Cornell died Wednesday night in Detroit, his representative, Brian Bumbery, said in a statement that called the death “sudden and unexpected” and that said the singer’s family would be “working closely with the medical examiner to determine the cause.”

Dontae Freeman, a spokesman for the Detroit Police Department, said in an interview that officers responded around midnight at the MGM Grand casino to an apparent suicide of a white man, born July 20, 1964, who was pronounced dead on the scene. He would not confirm the victim’s name; Mr. Cornell’s date of birth is July 20, 1964.

Yea, multiple sources have reported that he was found in the bathroom with a band around his neck. And just my opinion, after watching clips of last nights performance, he sounded off. Missing some lyrics, timing mistakes, and some of his screams just didnt have a lot of 'balls'. Possible drug relapse, then suicide?

Busty, I'm not sure what you meant but your post made me immediately think of this. Such a great cover.

This is a hard one. Today was already going to be hard enough, then I wake up to this. Rest in peace.

NPR's reporting the cause of death to be suicide by hanging according to the Coroner's report.

Really super sad news. I can't admit to knowing much about Chris Cornell, but he never struck me as the suicidal type. Really bummed.

Senseless, and likely preventable.

@ Liz - agree completely. So glad I was fortunate enough to see him back in the 80's, 90's, 00's with SG and AS and recently for his solo gig.

What a fucking waste, and how horrific for his family. I just told my wife I will never do that to her.

This one definitely hurts, and I was so looking forward to the next SG release. Felt like they were building up to something better than the last two.

Sorry mate, just my Aussie slang coming out. Short for devastated. I remember as a kid being sad about Kurt & John Candy but since then have really been too affected by celebrity deaths but this one hurts.

I got off work at 2 AM mountain time, started up my truck for the drive home in a snow storm. I turn the radio dial to the only AM channel I get up in the rockies. As I am expecting to hear the next segment into the Mojave Incident, instead I hear the first 20 seconds of an old familiar song: Black Hole Sun. Then the announcer comes on with a very somber voice and I knew right away what he was about to say. I'm still in a daze. This one hit me hard. Sad day.

Still bummed about this, moreso with the news that it was suicide.

Soundgarden were a huge influence on me, and a gateway band to many things. Their complexity of songwriting and strange time patterns were certainly a precursor to me getting into more "complex" band such as Helmet and Tool. There work in general I felt was better than the other "big 4" Seattle bands. Badmotorfinger is an album I'd happily include in my top 10.

The suicide thing is a timeful reminder than many of us battle with mental illness from time to time, and that we should all be looking out for each other. Chris has made his choice, but I worry that others also in a bad place might need some more help.

I'm always here for anyone on Fourtheye that wants a chat.

Whatsoever I've feared has come to life
Whatsoever I've fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time
Now I'm doing time
'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

Whomsoever I've cured, I've sickened now
And whomsoever I've cradled, I've put you down
I'm a search light soul they say
But I can't see it in the night

I'm only faking when I get it right
When I get it right

'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days

How would I know
That this could be my fate?
How would I know
That this could be my fate? Yeah

So what you wanted to see good
Has made you blind
And what you wanted to be yours
Has made it mine

Don't you lock up something
That you wanted to see fly
Hands are for shaking
No, not tying, no, not tying

I sure don't mind a change
I sure don't mind a change
Yeah, I sure don't mind, sure don't mind a change
I sure don't mind a change

'Cause I fell on black days
I fell on black days
