Interview with Marten Hagström

How does not having a vocalist change the performance experience for you?
The way it sounds is not that different...but it's more the way you feel walking up onstage, not seeing the entire band, because we've never done this before. You're used to being that five-piece unit, walking up and doing this together...but there's no use complaining about it. The only thing we can do is try to make the most out of it. We travelled over here now. A lot of places we play on this tour we haven't really played for a long time, so canceling is not really an option.

There's so much aggression in your music; it's almost overwhelming to experience live. Where does that emotion come from?
I don't know why, but we enjoy painting a musical picture of something really disturbing and threatening...It's a way to create an atmosphere of menace and that kind of brooding feeling. That aggression, live, it's like any other emotion. If you're supposed to do something with some kind of effort, you better go all the way. There's no being half-assed about stuff like that. So it's an all-in type of thing for us. That [aggression] is actually something we go for, even though we don't feel very threatening ourself. It's to go together with our music. We're the twisted, dark cousin of what a lot of other psychedelic bands have done or progressive bands, like Tool or Pink Floyd. It's about setting a type of emotion, but we're just moving in a more harm-friendly territory.

Alright.. another struggling night for me, but you guys in Silver Springs MD fucking kept the show together. And it's not every day you get to see a guy in a wheel chair crowd surf over and over again.. It kept my spirit up. You rule man!!

I'm deeply thankful for all the support you give even though I'm not on top of my game yet.

Big thanks and tons of respect and love to you all!!

/Jens

It was so cool seeing that.  The crowd was so into it.  The dude in the wheelchair was even in the mosh pit.  Everyone was so cool about crowd surfing him and the last time Jens high fived the guy.  Made me proud to be a Meshuggah fan and proud of MD/DC.

Not sure how I feel about this.  Pretty excited Meshuggah are touring, but the idea of seeing them supporting Lamb of God doesn't really appeal...

Meshuggah shouldn't support anyone at this point. I mean, unless Tool wants to take them out again. I wouldn't object to that.

From the promoters Facebook page:

Both bands will play full headline sets and enjoy their respective full production and lighting set ups!

Doesn't sound like a total write-off then.  I have no delusions as to whether Meshuggah should be supporting bands or not (there are very few in the world that should never be a support band, and Meshuggah are nowhere near that category, talented they may be).  Lamb of God is certainly not an act I'd see headlining over them by choice though.

Will be interesting to see what the ticket prices are.  If they're not outrageous I'll go along, and most likely have an early night (I'd at least check out the first few LOG songs before rendering final judgement).

Agree with Joey.  Meshuggah should not be opening up for anyone.  Hell if they toured with Tool again Tool should be opening up for them at this point, but I know I am in the minority on that one.  Bottom line for me, Lamb of God fucking sucks.  And I do mean that with all sincerity.  One of the worst metal bands out there.

Would love to see Meshuggah tour with The Ocean.  That would be one helluva show.

Since there's a Meshuggah thread, this is going here.  But this could easily be on the Cool Shit thread as well.

refer to HB post, April 30th, (cough*asshole*cough)

@Mog: although I agree with your sentiment about tool opening for meshuggah on some relative level, it can't work being that meshuggah rarely plays longer than an hour set.  Order of operations in that regard would be fucked.

Also, the ocean are quite talented, but some of their shit meanders on too long for its own good and other stuff is just awful.

No, I definitely got that, and it was hilarious.

They were all referring to my fuck up on posting that Meshuggah lighting guy vid months after Hellboy had already posted it.  However, the jokes on THEM because I replaced HB's vid from April with another.  The jerks will probably never figure it out, because they're pretty dense, and end up apologizing to me.  Don't say anything, K?
