Haake tells Metal Hammer: "This album is recorded live. It's the first time we've done that in 20, 25 years. It was time limitations that stopped us doing it before. And it's been interesting.

"If you put it all together using computers, then you often have to fix problems after the fact. I've gone back to records where I've not known every drum part. And once you do that, you can start with drums and then just add layers of guitars and then bass and it all sounds perfect.

"'Obzen' and 'Koloss' are great albums, but, to me, they are a little too perfect. It didn't really capture what we sounded like honestly. But where we recorded live, you get to hear the push and pull, one person might be a little ahead and the other might be a little behind. If you kill that, you can kill the energy."

He adds: "So for us it was just about going back to those albums that inspired us when we were growing up, that were important to us in our formative years, and all of those bands had that energy. The albums in the '80s and early '90s had the rawness that I'm talking about — that's what we wanted to recapture."

- Yes. The louder the better. Stops me from thinking.

Sounds like a good plan. I remember seeing photos of live amps a few months back which made me assume they were going to record the guitars a little more organically rather than through AxeFX or something. Not that I've ever had a huge issue with their sound, but I prefer the "old ways".

We'll see if it pays off soon enough!

AxeFX is way overused nowadays anyways.

I love Meshuggah (and so many other acts that use AxeFX... Deftones comes to mind) but I really don't like the sound or tone. Those two acts do it best I think (Animals as Leaders too) but I can always hear the digital-ness behind it. Sounds "tinny" to me.

Meshuggah sound ok, but I find AAL has a pretty shitty guitar tone, especially on earlier stuff.

Superb.

After watching a recent interview with Tomas Haake I was concerned with the change in direction in terms of recording. While Tomas said he thought Obzen and Koloss were great albums, he thought they sounded a bit too perfect. I certainly understand what he was saying and what led them to taking this approach this time around to achieve a more raw/live sound they wanted, but personally that gave me pause as I prefer the highly polished perfection in Obzen and Koloss. While Koloss is a bit muddier it stills sounds perfect.

For me, the more polished and clean an album sounds, the better...depending on the type of music of course. While the live experience is wonderful, I don't really look for that in a studio recorded album.

With this first song it sounds like Meshuggah found whatever balance they were looking for. It still sounds like Meshuggah perfection, albeit a touch more raw. Still very much a diamond, just a touch less polished, but it still works. Looking forward to hearing the rest of the album.

No Adelaide show :(
Also, the Melbourne show is mid-week, which makes coming across for it problematic.
There's plenty of time in the schedule for an Adelaide show, so maybe it will happen if people complain enough on the internet.

@Zig - Yeah I watched those interviews as well all good stuff. I had no idea the extent of his back injury and it makes me appreciate his talent even more the way he has been able to maintain such a high level while trying to fully recuperate.

Good info in this podcast as well

Album has leaked for those interested...

Update: quick verdict - possibly their best album since Nothing. The first third is a bit same old, same old, but from then on it kicks some serious ass.

Wow. That's strong praise. For reference, how much do you love Obzen and Koloss? And what are your standout tracks from those?

I think they're both pretty good albums, and generally I prefer their post-Nothing work to pre. I'd give Nothing about a 9/10, Obzen an 8 and Koloss a 7.5. After a first listen I'd say that The Violent Sleep of Reason is at least an 8.
