I think The Last Baron might be one of the best, if not the best, prog metal songs of the '00s.

Say what you will of their career post 80's, but there's no doubting the influence and power Metallica had in the early stages of their career. Am looking forward to this.

Sounds like everything they've done in the 20th century. Not my cup of tea, but i'm sure Metallica fans will like it.

Though I do like that they released this out of nowhere. Makes me hope Tool will do the same.

Sounds very reminiscent of the last track off Death Magnetic which is pretty much exactly what I expected for this new album. One of the worlds great ironies that they went soft when the world wanted em heavy and now they try to go heavy when they could probably write a solid bluesy type album if they gave it a go.

They didn't really release it out of nowhere though. Everybody knew they were in the studio and I think they even said they were going to have an album out this year.

Yeah, Metallica have been talking up recording their album and getting it out later this year for months now.

I thought the track was pretty good compared to their other recent work.

I actually thought Death Magnetic was alright, but I heard it twice then had zero desire to hear it again since.

That was ok, I guess. I didn't hate it, but I don't feel any desire to listen to it again. Those drums sucked though.

Yeah I feel the same way. Is it the only beat Lars knows how to play?

I liked the honesty of the drums. They could have easily called in a session drummer or something but they didn't. I can respect that.

I just think they sound bad and sit too high in the mix. It's really annoying.

This is hardly a new Metallica problem though just as the bass is to low (at least in my opinion). Had a few listens now, given their track record and age I'm actually kinda impressed.

These guys are only in their 50s. Is that really what impresses you? I enjoyed Death Magnetic and I'm excited about this new one actually being a double album with only 12 songs. I will agree that Lars is not an impressive musician.

I enjoyed it, but I haven't listened to Metallica in a long time... For me the snare being so prominent in the mix is annoying, it is belted through the whole song, and it is almost all I could hear...

The guys in Metallica aren't that old. The other day Kitaan told them to get off his lawn!

Yeh it kinda does. Not so much because they're in their 50's but because they've been doing this for 34 odd years and still able to bust out a tune like that.

Counterpoint: I think this song sounds exactly like the kind of thing a 35 year old band would put out.

Pretty sure his band has proven that far far worse songs could have been written than this one.. after a few listens now I'm really digging it. Lyrics aren't groundbreaking & Lars drumming isn't either but neither of those have been on point for a long time now anyway so is expected.
