Classic AOTW - Jeff Wayne's Musical Ver of War of the Worlds
Classic AOTW - Jeff Wayne's Musical Ver of War of the Worlds
Give it a chance, this has amazing musicianship and so many great tunes + Richard Burton! Just the right proportion of cheesy to majesty.

No idea what this is but I'll give it a whirl.
Also, this feels like it should be AOTW not CAOTW

I don't know how to respond Pete. We haven't actually been civil with each other in years.
But you know I love ya DOCTOR.
Good to know that you and HB were already fans.

Ok so I'm only halfway into the first track and this is already kicking major ass.

On the off chance you're one of the 3 people in the world who hasn't heard/read/seen War of the Worlds, this contains SPOILERS.
I still remember the first time I heard the War of the Worlds story as a kid. Such a great story, so creepy, so hopeless near the end... then BAM! Defeated by bacteria! It made (makes) so much sense. That part still makes me smile. Us humans and our animal kingdom friends, we EARNED our place on this planet. They did not. Awesome! I wish I would've been around to see the people it freaked out back when it was first broadcasted on the radio.
So it should come as no surprise that I absolutely loved this album. I love how the beginning of the very first track foreshadows ("foreshadow" might be too strong a word but it does work anyway) the end, "no one could dream we were being scrutinized, as someone with a microscope studies creatures that swarm and multiply in a drop of water". The narrator does an absolutely perfect job on this. Speaking of that first track, holy shit what a way to begin!
"The chances of anything coming from Mars, are a million to one he said, but still they come!"
I do have a minor gripe or two about it but I'd be nitpicking. To those of you who might not listen to the whole album, you've gotta at least hear "The Eve of War" and "Brave New World". Awesome awesome stuff.
EDIT: Definitely listen to "Dead London" too!
8.5/10- Highest rating I've given to either of the AOTWs

Glad you dug it RP. My buddy got to see them do this live in the UK last year, said it was mind blowing... of course, Richard Burton wasn't available, but they did what they could.
And for the record, I would definitely go to a show with you, and even buy you a beer.

Well it does get a little bit dull in the middle section but I realize that's because it's a story. Every story/movie/etc tends to have dull/slow parts in the middle of it though.
Like I said, nitpicking.
It didn't really affect my grade of it though, an 8.5 for me is pretty damn high.

Thing that stood out for me on this album was the use of guitars for certain effects throughout the story. Awesome stuff. That and the narration is more or less flawless.

I was at both of those shows! The Dallas one was when Adam's guitar crapped out on him during Vicarious and May Jay did Adam's part vocally, right? I remember May Jay pointed to Justin and Danny and told them to keep going without missing a beat. It was pretty cool.

Phil Fucking Lynott! I thought that was him. Awesome to hear him amongst an eclectic cast.
I thought this was pretty fun, though id probably rather watch a production of it than just listen to it again. For a pure listening experience, I thought the use of instrumental fx was well utilized. Refreshing to hear that amidst the orchestrated disco, though of course this is definitely of it's time. It makes me curious to hear what this would have been sounded like if written during the early 20th century or today if they tried to make it sound of it's own time and not the present.
7.7/10

I just wanted to add that Dead London is so well done that it actually makes you feel bad for the Martians. Excellent excellent track.
There is a dvd of it. Saw it the other day, I loved it. Would love to see that show in person.limeygringo wrote:though id probably rather watch a production of it than just listen to it again.
