Oh and Jar Jar fucking Binks

This only scratches the surface. The "problems" that plagued the Star Wars prequels were far more all encompassing than just Hayden Plankface and Jar Jar.

And Natalie Portman was ANYTHING but "solid".

The plot was all over the place - a hastily thrown together mish mash of tone and style. Hard to follow at the best of times. Riddled with plotholes and massive leaps of logic. Excruciating dialogue and almost zero chemistry displayed between any of the leading actors. Anakin's jump to the darkside seemed forced and unnatural (not to mention far to sudden) with Mace Windu's standoff with Palpatine and his subsequent death being one of the most unintentionally hilarious scenes in motion picture history. Not to mention the many "nudge nudge wink wink" references to the OT and the baffling decision to inflict a heavy Kiwi accent on Boba Fett (when he never had one before) that sounded for all the world like nails on a blackboard.

That'll have to do for now as I don't have a spare four or five hours at the moment.

The acting in the original trilogy was much better than the prequels, I can't think of any arguments that would make me think otherwise.

Sure those in the prequels were pretty hamstrung by the script and the style of filming, but the bottom line is the acting was generally below par.

OT
Harrison Ford - phoned it in
Carrie Fisher - nailed it
Billy Dee - nailed it
Hammil - did his best
Frank Oz - deserved an Oscar

PT
Ewan - Drunk
Liam - nailed it
Jackson - solid but didn't have enough to work with
Frank Oz - criminally underused, should been a muppet 99% of the time
Portman - totally uninterested
Hayden - too much pressure plus too much ego, however were we really ever supposed to like Anakin anyway? He basically was entitled and privileged, and people hate that
Christopher Lee - should've been kept alive longer instead of having that droid they almost got Gary Oldman to be
Ahhh, Infotainment!

I kinda thought the prequels had some solid acting, I re-watched them recently. they had solid ACTORS not solid acting, Natalie Portman's agent actually had a hard sell after those movies. I've read she had a lot of problems getting roles after and they had to reassure casting directors it wasn't her fault lol. if you wanna geek out every Thursday night check out Collider on youtube, they do a Jedi Council video-cast. plus movie talk every day. those dudes are pretty grounded too, not just fan boys. they are massive fans though so don't get it twisted. one of them has a wife who's a big exec at Hasbro so they do get some great info.

the aforementioned Jedi Council show can be accessed from the same link. enjoy, you dorks. :ugeek:

I think the problem was the directing. Most of the cast was made up of good actors, as you said. Hell, isn't Hayden considered an above average actor in most things he's done outside of them?

no, that is a myth. that kid can't act, at all. but yes the direction was horrendous and rushed. Lucas pretty much admitted he just wanted to fuck around with CGI kinda like Peter Jackson in the Hobbit movies, which is why the LOTR had more soul to it and he tried to get Guillermo to do it. Lucas passing things off to Kathleen Kennedy who interned dealt out the projects (Anthology trilogy and Saga trilogy) to JJ Abrams, Collin Treverow (spelling?), Rian Johnson, Gareth Edwards and Lawrence Kasdan was a brilliant move. with ILM, Hasbro and Disney bankrolling everything, great move. kinda like what Disney did with Kevin Feige and Marvel.

I think the one with Rey and Finn look cool, but the others were unnecessary. Someone in their graphics department got a bit carried away.
