Fair call. I was in a pretty average position in 2011, so that no doubt would've impacted. Were you at Adel Ent Centre 2002?... My recollections are that the sound was pretty average (which i think had less to do with the performance & more the setup / venue acoustics).

That 2002 Tool show is the best I've seen.  Sound was excellent, I remember in particular the bass and kick pedals being brutal, especially during Aenema.  The show the other week at the same venue has immaculate sound as well, though without some of the ommph.

Can't agree. I guess our ears work differently. I do remember the bass & recall it as as being far too much, drowning out a lot of the detail. Up until the the renovations, AEC had a distinct reputation for being an acoustically rubbish venue (aka 'the tin shed' back in those days). For me, 2002 clearly evidenced that. I was interested to see how the recent show would sound in comparison & thankfully, things have significanlty improved since then imho.

The Duluth 09 show was probably the "worst" Tool show I've seen, but I still enjoyed it a lot. The weird electronic segue into Lost Keys and Rosetta Stoned, that whole section was fucking unreal that night and was the best performance of those songs I've ever seen*. That alone made that night for me. The rest was just fine, the only thing that held that show back was getting the same setlist I'd seen so many times minus a (huge almost 20 minute!) song.

*Would kill for a copy of that. Double for a video. Never have been able to find one.

I have it. Would you like me to torrent it on dimeadozen?

I'm not sure where the reputation came from.  I've been to around 10 shows there and sound has been great at each one.  The recent Tool show is the first time I've been since the refurb.

Our ears must indeed work differently.

I must have the dates in order to find them, the search will take a long time otherwise.

Yeah, at least amongst my circles back in the day, there was a general feeling of dissapointment whenever shows were announced at the Ent Centre ...& not Thebarton. Regardless of opinions on sound quality however, the 2002 setlist was pretty great! If this old man's memory (& setlist.fm) are correct, we were treated with Grudge, Jimmy & Parabola... To which I have no complaints whatsoever.

Thebarton would have been great, but that sold out pretty quick back in 1997, so they were never going to be back there.  Jimmy was a definite highlight of the evening...

Indeed. Some very close seconds over the years, but I think that '97 show will always be my all time favourite. Definitely post-Lateralus, Thebarton was never gonna happen. I think during that era they could've filled it 3 times over.

Favorite show all time ive attended...

August 5th, 2009

Toronto, Ontario

Molson Amphitheatre

... Crazy energy, maynard was in very rare form talking about french fries numerous times, he called guest guitarist steve niles, stephen hawking and says rock and roll is in fact the cure for quadrapalegics, the whole band was spot on all show, and a nice setlist... jambi, ions, stinkfist, french fries, 46&2, french fries, schism, lost keys, rosetta stoned, flood, aenema, intermission, lateralus, french fries, interlude, vicarious! if you can find the entire show I highly suggest downloading it! and quite possibly the sickest poster...

This was my first Tool show and I'd kill to have someone upload good quality audio recording of any songs. Full show would be spectacular. If you have video, I will bow down to your greatness. This show was one of the greatest experiences in my life and the band blew me away with their performance and antics.

I have seen all YouTube vids available for this show and apart from a couple, most of them are not good quality ( not a dig at tapers, I am grateful to the videos currently up on YouTube ).

No amount of drugs can match the high of seeing Lost Keys +Rosetta Stoned at this show.

side note to Insaner. i was just continuing the discussion. giving my own thoughts. i respect your opinion and views on the matter. you do seem about as objective as one can be on the subject. just curious, what is your favorite Tool memory from the 50+ shows. im sure there are many.

yeah there are many.  first time i heard adams guitar tone live on the side stage at lolla in nashville, days before they were moved to the main stage.  thats what hooked me, that performance.  next up was 96 Ænima tour at the iball in atlanta.  went by myself!  unreal performance, everyone painted and all that.  billys last show as tech i believe, i remember maynard saying something about it.  caught a drumstick.  the next lolla show in atlanta, maynard in drag.  reverend maynard in new orleans "you come here to hear the word of the lord?  well you came to the wrong place." - chucks bible in to crowd...  buzz on stinkfist, first slow pushit for me.  lolla in nashville again painted.  stories of danny flying on a magic carpet to the giza plateau.  the entire lead up to the first lateralus show at the tabernacle.  maynard and danny and their women standing in line with me to buy their own album at tower records the night before and no one even recognized them.  me to my buddy also in line - "hey thats danny."  him - "and thats maynard!"  good times.  maynard was actually cool that night, danny as always was awesome.  the next day, walking in and seeing dannys kit in a fucking bar.  LOUD show.  red rocks.  oh, red rocks.  just unreal.  a show in boulder sticks out, not sure why.  crazy good vibes.  colorado springs the next night, maynard painted by alex grey and the open with cold and ugly and the entire GA floor fell down at once.  always love to hear those notes of passage to bangkok...

first 10k days show for me in kansas city.  won a ton of cash in the casino, and saw tool working out the kinks in a pretty small place.  the two shows at the pearl, which i think were the first i saw lost keys and both nights were just amazing.  sneaking on the floor for those and being down there was like seeing tool in your basement.   perfect sound.  and then of course that magical night in atlanta at the duluth show in question, great times.  bonnaroo was sick if you were up front.  nobby giving me shit for being everywhere and always giving me a setlist.

theres so many more, but those stick out this morning.
