UST gorged on an entire series of Game of Thrones? Then you deserve a reward. Microsoft plans to give special "awards" to viewers in return for watching television programs and advertisement on its new Xbox One games console.

A patent application lodged by the US computer giant reveals that the company wants to incentivise TV viewing by offering tangible rewards to everyone watching video content on its devices.

The concept, an extension of the "achievements" that Xbox 360 players can unlock by completing in-game tasks, could lead to viewers getting free Microsoft products in return for watching TV. But the awards scheme would also require a sophisticated monitoring system to track every program and advert watched by its users, and confirm that they had actively engaged with rewardable content.

What if a viewer simply leaves their device in "play" mode before disappearing to fiddle with their iPad? The patent suggests that the rewards system could be made compatible with Microsoft's Kinect sensor.

The viewing behaviour could include "an action performable by the viewer and detectable by one or more sensors, such as a depth camera". A sensor could detect whether a viewer's eyes were really on the screen.

The patent also mentions a system "configured to track the viewing behaviours of one or more viewers" that can "compile one or more user-specific reports of the viewing behaviours, and send the user-specific reports to a remote device to determine whether the user-viewing goal has been met".

Microsoft believes its patent, which it calls "The Awards and Achievements Across TV Ecosystem", will find favour with advertisers struggling to target viewers who can now speed through commercial breaks at high speed using digital catch-up services.

Deus Ex: The Fall will be a mobile/tablet game.  More like Deus Ex: The Fail.

Share access to your games with everyone inside your home: Your friends and family, your guests and acquaintances get unlimited access to all of your games. Anyone can play your games on your console--regardless of whether you are logged in or their relationship to you.

Give your family access to your entire games library anytime, anywhere: Xbox One will enable new forms of access for families. Up to ten members of your family can log in and play from your shared games library on any Xbox One. Just like today, a family member can play your copy of Forza Motorsport at a friend’s house. Only now, they will see not just Forza, but all of your shared games. You can always play your games, and any one of your family members can be playing from your shared library at a given time.

Trade-in and resell your disc-based games: Today, some gamers choose to sell their old disc-based games back for cash and credit. We designed Xbox One so game publishers can enable you to trade in your games at participating retailers. Microsoft does not charge a platform fee to retailers, publishers, or consumers for enabling transfer of these games.

Give your games to friends: Xbox One is designed so game publishers can enable you to give your disc-based games to your friends. There are no fees charged as part of these transfers. There are two requirements: you can only give them to people who have been on your friends list for at least 30 days and each game can only be given once.

The ability to loan or rent games will be dead soon enough.  It was on the cards well before Xbox One was announced.  It's only a matter of time until physical media is no longer used in the gaming industry.

Personally I can't think of the last time I loaned or rented a game, so this particular issue has little concern to me.

I will say that the idea of having 10 "family members" being able to play games on whatever console they want sounds interesting...

If I were to buy a next-gen console, it'd most likely be a PS4 at this stage.

Quite interesting contrasts between the two consoles demonstrated over the last day.  Still no games or compelling reason for me to upgrade from my PC though.

It's PS4 for me too. The only things that interest me about the new Xbox are the "impulse triggers", the new Remedy game, and Dead Rising 3. None of which are enough to get me to buy the console.

If I get a real job when I move back to Australia, I'll probably get a next-gen console, now that I think about it.

It'll be after I get a desktop PC beast, though.

An extra $150 seems a bit raw. Is that a speculative price? We did only just find out . . .

The Xbox price is allegedly from the Australia Microsoft Executive: http://www.kotaku.com.au/2013/06/we-hav ... -xbox-one/

Not sure about Sony.  To be honest the prices are what I expected for a next-gen console. Seems as though Sony have learnt from the lessons of the overly expensive PS3.
