Watched a few movies lately. Here are some short reviews:

The Hobbit pt 1: Hugely disappointing compared to the LOTR trilogy. 6/10
The Hobbit pt 2: Much better, but still not great (though Smaug was). 7/10
12 Years A Slave: Pretty good, quite an interesting story. 7/10
American Hustle: Not really what I was expecting from the movie, but it was great. 9/10

Kudos for thinking the Hobbit failed!

I mean, LotR is an excellent adaption of the book, the Hobbit is a crap adaption of the book. The Hobbit is a childeren's book. But the movie takes childeren aspects and mixes it with chopped heads, an ultra ugly albino ork and stuff. It just doesn't work.
It should''ve been an all ages movie, okay 6+, but never a 12+ movie.

Yeah, I didn't like the kiddy type elements, smacked of The Phantom Menace to me. Not that LOTR was adults only or anything, but just didn't feel so tacky. The Goblins in particular were fucking awful, as were the Trolls.

I don't mind what they've done with the extended story though. Smaug was excellent as well, possibly the best dragon I can think of in movies.

Would have been a great movie if not for Jennifer 'just like us' Lawrence.

I liked her in Silver Linings Playbook & X-Men First Class. Plus the best thing in a mediocre Hunger Games pt1.

She just takes me out of any movie she's in, I don't buy her acting.

Haneke's The Piano Teacher ("La Pianiste").

One of the coldest, most harrowing films I've ever seen. The final scene will haunt me forever. A triumph of euro arthouse sophistication and psychologically disturbing erotica.

If only Hollywood were so bold.

If only most people didn't prefer to go and watch Christopher Nolan embarrass himself with hammy, overtly emotional claptrap and grandstanding comic book drama.

Aaaaaaaah the dilettante mass populace......

Anyways...

How long do you think it will be before you disappear up your own arse?

Not that I disagree or anything.

^That goes nowhere.^

Wife saw Age of Extinction twice, first run she missed the last half hour because of an emergency call. She thinks it is an awesome movie and would totally not mind to see it a third time. Best in the series to her.

Still waiting for Jupiter Ascending.

If you haven't seen it yet, PLEASE go out of your way to do so.

I'm not going to spoil you as to what it's all about but....yikes!....that final "scene" and all......
So I watched this movie at Tyson and Califum's recommendation. I quite enjoyed it up unti the final scene. I was scratching my head wondering if this was some kind of elaborate troll or cliffhanger. I even watched the end credits waiting for some further explanation

In the end there appears to be none. Perhaps there is stuff I missed in the movie, but it's really taken the wind out of my sails. Maybe I'm expecting something too Hollywood.

Either way, I'd probably give it a 7/10 right up until the last 10 seconds of the movie, at which point I'd reduce it to 6/10.
