Maybe not.. 5 songs isnt a lot, but look at their past albums. Not including filler tracks/segues, and counting songs like Parabol/a, or D/R/T, or as 1 track which they break up for the album

UNDERTOW - 9 songs
AENIMA - 9 songs
LATERALUS - 7 songs
10000 DAYS - 8 songs (im counting the wings series as 2 songs here, even though it could be grouped as 1 long track which they broke up for the album)

Yeah but also consider that one of those songs could be the longest song they've done yet, which would be at least thirteen minutes. So that would be like two songs on any of their previous albums.

I was really hoping to see some VIP reports saying they were finishing up the songwriting process and looking to hit the studio by springtime.

If that report is accurate, I think it pretty much eliminates a 2017 release.

I'm not sure I agree with that, I wasn't expecting Tool to be recording this year anyway. There is still plenty of time to finish songwriting, hit the studio sometime in the first half of 2017 and have a late 2017 release.

Yep. Don't think they'll hit the studio for maybe another year....

In all fairness though, one of those "five" is most likely the 23 minute epic which by all accounts (according to Blair) is in the can. A consolation of sorts.

Still, no 2017 release date for us.

Like i've said for years now, I'll get excited for a new album when I see an official release date. Until then who knows how long it will take or if it will ever come.yeah it could be released in 2017 but it's just as likely it won't be here come 2020. May sound a stretch but so did 2016 , 4 years ago. La sigh

Well we could look at it this way- 2020? Sure. The longer it takes to finish a -5th album-, the more experimental & weird it's going to be. Have you ever spoken to a person with Dementia? Pure craziness.
