Peach / Suns of the Tundra

Searched around, didn't see a topic for these guys.

Of course most of you will know of Peach as the band Justin Chancellor was in before Tool (and from Tool having covered You Lied & Spasm), and you'll probably aslo know that two of the original members of Peach, Simon Oakes & Rob Havis eventually re-grouped as Suns of the Tundra in the early 2000's.

So to kick off this thread I thought I'd bridge both bands with a song written by Peach (intended for their second album before they broke up) and re-recorded and released by SotT on their 2009 EP Illuminate, Made of Stone. It was played at every gig Peach supported Tool at in '94 .

(2 or 3 other Peach Vol. 2 tracks are out there, I'll post links later. And SotT are planning to re-record a couple of other Vol.2 tracks this year, Beautiful Toys & Pond Life, for an upcoming album).

Anyway, SotT just released a new album a couple of months ago called Bones of Brave Ships, and I think it's really great. Full playlist on youtube here:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dobxHj0 ... 88dfzV55sb

It's a concept album, written to an old, 80 minute documentary called "South", from 1919, which chronicled Ernest Shackletons's 1914-1916 expedition-turned-survival-mission to Antarctica.

If you just want to check out one song, make it this one:

It's still working in the U. S. A.! U. S. A.! U. S. A.!

I'm digging the driving bass and drums on Serenity. Just one listen so far, but it's peaked my interest.

Good idea for a new thread, TY.

I have a very hard time understanding why you're not running a VPN in this day and age

I have on, I just choose not to turn it on for the most part. Not to mention configure it to point to whatever country I want to pretend I'm actually in a the time.

The real point is that bands like Suns of the Tundra have absolutely nothing to gain by geoblocking their material. I shouldn't have to use a VPN to access it.

It's up on Deezer (free to join) http://www.deezer.com/artist/6204178 , and I think it' on Spotify, too.

The Youtube links aren't their own account, I think it was automatically generated. They should put all their own stuff on Youtube though, it's up there anyway, and join twitter, would make them more visible/easier to find. As it stands I think they only have their own website and a facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Suns-of- ... 3055808299
http://www.sunsofthetundra.co.uk/

I got Giving Birth to a Stone the other day, it's a pretty decent debut album. Showed potential.

The other Peach Vol. 2 tracks that I know of, "Disappear Here", "Jackhead", and "1965":
(It says SotT, but it's actually Peach.)

I think they levelled up from the debut album.
There was another called Pudendum Mask, but I can't remember if I heard it or just saw the title on SotT's Facebook page... Anyway, as I said earlier, SotT are planning on re-recording a couple of other Vol.2 tracks, hopefully this year, called "Pond Life" & "Beautiful Toys".

EDIT: Found that other track, Mask live in '94:

Apparently more of a jam than a full track

Another Peach Vol II track surfaces, called "Babytalk", this time under Simon Oakes (singer/guitar for Peach & SotT) other band GEYSER. It's being released on an EP this weekend according to the SotT facebook:

"We are delighted to bring you a new film of SOTT's project off-shoot band Geyser at Download last year. This track Babytalk is the title for Geyser's self-titled EP which is released on Saturday 13 February. Babytalk was originally written by Simon for 'Peach Volume 2' but ended up in the Geyser set back in 1995. It's played here by SOTT's Mark, Andy and Simon, joined by their partners-in-prog Al and Adam. Enjoy!"
https://www.facebook.com/pages/Suns-of- ... 3055808299

GEYSER was started after Oakes left Peach back in '95. Also features comedian Al Murray on drums, Andy Prestige (SotT, Angelwitch) also on drums, Adam Wolters on Bass, & Mark Moloney ) SotT on guitar

Here's the studio recording:

And this is them playing it at Download last year:

Also, it looks like the Bones of Brave Ships tunes were taken down from the auto-generated youtube account.

BUT Tundra were in the studio late last year and will be releasing a series of EPs starting this year. Will keep thread updated as news on that comes out.

SotT just posted earlier about gearing up to release their 4th album:
"We've started thinking about the press release for the new album. That's got to be a good sign, right?"
https://www.facebook.com/pages/category ... 055808299/

Apparently they finished it back in August:
"We've reached the finishing line.
Seven new songs ready to be released and we hope you'll like them.
More news and plans soon."

Want to see what the album looks like? We mastered our fourth release, Murmuration, today with our good friend Rob Aubrey in Southampton, England. The second picture shows the songs, all nicely laid out in different colours.

Tentatively due out this September. 8-)

Suns of the Tundra's new album "Murmuration" comes out this Friday.
Title track:

Their Facebook page:
https://www.facebook.com/Suns-of-the-Tu ... 055808299/

The album (CD or Digital) can be bought at their bandcamp page:
https://sunsofthetundra.bandcamp.com/al ... JWFyhUxWZc

--Tracklist--
1.Murmuration
2.Each Of Us
3.Sunflower
4.Four Corners
5.Echo Of An Angel
6.Survive Just Fine
7.Pond Life

That last track, "Pond Life", is actually a re-recording of an old, unreleased Peach tune. Apparently "Sunflower" also has its roots in 1993.

Beyond that news, SotT's first 2 albums (the 2004 self-titled, and 2006's "Tunguska") have been made available for streaming in the usual places (joining the already available "Illuminate" EP, and "Bones of Brave Ships" album).

SotT also signed with Bad Elephant Music a few months back.

Thanks for the heads-up!

I've enjoyed all their releases to date so it's always a nice surprise when another one pops up.

Short track-by-track podcast with Simon & Andy Prestige with Patrick Walker from Warning.

Some interesting tidbits about the songs and band history there. Like the demo for Sunflower was written in 1993 by Simon but was rejected by the other guys in Peach for being "too progressive".

The new album is quite solid, though I'm not overly gone on on Four Corners.
My main criticism is the mix is quite thin, lacking in low end, like it was mix or mastered on headphones/speakers that had a bass boost switched on. Disappointing after the great production Bones of Brave Ships had.

I'd say Sunflower & Echo of an Angel are the best songs on there.
