I was doing 11 hours a day on a show ("The Masked Singer") nearly every day for the past 6 weeks, and just didn't have much downtime, so haven't been very active here. Plus, there hasn't been much to talk about.
I was working on the "2nd Unit" shooting all of the non-performance content (another crew does the performances). We shot all of the clue packages and everything else that isn't part of the performances: show openings, footage of the "Men in Black" polishing the costumes backstage, promos, interviews, some green-screen stuff, and mostly sets with virtual scenery behind the characters on a 20' tall 4000x1600 curved LED video screen. If you've seen any of the "making of" videos for "The Mandalorian", it was kinda like that, but on a much smaller scale. Much, much smaller, but similar process.

It does quite well in the US, as well. I think there are localized versions in a number of countries, but it started in South Korea.

It must be nice to work on a something that actually celebrates great music compared to your day job with Tool.

Yeah. There are some scorchers on that show. There's no singing on the stage I work on, though, so we're spared of it.

Yeah, it is. It's way more technologically advanced than what we are doing at this show. I think it has bi-directional communication with the cameras and changes perspective on the fly. Looks pretty cool, anyway. I know a few people who've worked on it.

The touring industry and the TV industry have very little overlap of personnel. There are some who do both, but it's kinda rare. And they both have very separate ladders to climb. 30+ years of experience in touring doesn't mean much to most TV folks, so I'm not connected to gigs like that one.

A guy I went to college with does work on that show. He's a motion designer, and it has something to do with "simulation backgrounds"... it's all Greek to me.

That is good to read, Junior. Did they film in the states? I have read that a few shows (Name that Tune is one I can think of ) actually went to Australia so they could film with crowds.

It was done in Hollywood. I think they might be re-using audience shots from a previous season. I never went over to the performance soundstage, so I can't confirm that, but I think it mentions it in the credits somewhere.

It's pretty impressive tech. I'm sure someday it'll be as "quaint" as every new technology eventually becomes, but for now it's pretty cool.

It must be pretty annoying being born on 4/20 when you're in the music biz.
