Maynard does have a gift for poetry. It's easy to see how some of his work would pique curiosity... especially in the younger generation that are just being introduced to the music. Their first taste for a spirituality outside of their upbringing may have been found through the band (mine was). This is why you find few casual fans... most FUCKING LOVE tool. They credit them for showing them the light (the light being that it's okay to think for yourself and find your own path). It took me a little while before I realized that was the core message behind the obscurities, bits, and pieces that form together to construct his songs. Atheism, Wicca, Buddhism, Kabbalah, and even Christianity (Wings seems more open-minded to me) are all prevalent in the work. What's it mean? Start digging.
