OK, everyone, here's the plan: We're going to do something similar to our quite successful Album of the Week idea.

We'll do a Book of the Week - but with a difference.

Outside of media easily found and read within, say, twenty minutes online (such as poetry and short story collections), what we'll do is have more of a discussion-based concept of books that are likely to have been read by the majority of forum members. To make things a bit easier, it is proposed that the next week's forum member will ask members if they have read a certain book out of a number.

Better to show by example:

Say I'm the first week. I pick "1984". Most people have read that. I start the discussion with something like, "This book has strong homosexual overtones. But for the vaginal graces of Julia, this is merely a dense tome dedicated to the uneasy success of homosexuality in the totalitarian world."

UKE will say, "That's cray-cray, and here's why . . ."

So on, and so forth. For a week. Everyone learns something, we share stuff, everyone's happy.

Now, because, say, Tyson is the next week, he'll post a very short list of books he wants to talk about, concurrently, with my week. (Maybe even a poll?). Because everyone fancies themselves to be a bit of an intellectual, he (and the community, in a way), picks "A Brief History of Time".

Rinse, repeat.

First, though, we need a list of members who want to be a part of this. I'll keep this open for a week or so, and I propose we start on the first week of August.

Fine tuning of the concept is probably needed, so all suggestions are welcome.

I really think that this is worth a shot. It's a bit of a left-field idea, but I think it will be very rewarding.
O love will you read the letters I will send to you.

Just for the example alone, I'm in.  LOLz.

Again, I'm far from an intellectual, so I'm not sure what I'll be able to add to the discussion.  But what the fuck.

Not looking for snooty intellectual wank-offs - in fact, if you haven't read the book in question, that would maybe be a good thing. The best way to learn is to teach, you know, so by someone explaining what a book is about, it helps them understand it and their own views better.

$50 says someone picks a Vonnegut book.

I guess I'm not following what you are saying because neither example you gave (1984 or brief history of time) is a short 20 minute read (200-350pages).

Please elaborate...

Lets knock autism now.

Anyway, I'd prefer it to be a book of the month as I'd be buying it off amazon and the fact that a week isn't enough to read or even reread something and soak it in.

Just sayin

"Autism" is the new "gay". As in, a new insult that doesn't mean what it inherently means. Or maybe I just spend too much time on 4chan.

The idea of this was (yep, past tense) to discuss books and other written media that we have all likely read - to give direction to a discussion. Learn a little, and enjoy other's opinions.

I'm happy to call it quits at this point, because it doesn't look like it was going to work. Not necessarily a lofty idea, sure, but one that doesn't seem to be too popular already.

The good news is that there's nothing stopping any of us creating a thread to talk about any book at all, with no strings attached. So, I'll give that a go.

Thanks guys.

Mr. bossman, why are you so frightened of me? Constantly slinging insults my way attempting to improve your self worth?

I read your description and understood the first part and then you go and give 2 examples that didn't meet your criteria... why give examples that are not in line with what you are looking to do?

I'd love to join in on this, though just from a contribution standpoint with commentary.

Also, '][' [[]] [[]] ][,, why is everything you post now in that yellow box? I noticed it a while ago and thought it was some sort of glitch, now I'm curious.

I imagine it's to inflate his ego.  I don't like it personally, but without removing the rich text options available to all of us there's no way to do that.

The fact that people don't like it makes me want to keep the yellow box even more.
