Classic AOTW: Helmet - Meantime

This week is a classic from the 90s, and a band that is currently playing around Australia with The Melvins.

With Helmet in it's current form being a shadow of their previous selves, it's easy to forget they wrote an album as good as Meantime. Not a bad track on this album, and an easy 10/10 from me. My favorite tracks are Turned Out and Role Model.

My review:

It's Helmet. So no real surprises as to what's on offer here. It's very.......1992.

All I remember of it at the time is that it gave birth to a new generation of "intelligent" metal heads who seemingly popped out of nowhere. A veritable clone army in their khaki pants, converse sneakers, baseball caps and crew cut hairstyles. Oh and they all seemed to be mad on basketball and snowboarding.

Needless to say I was not one of them.

And the music you ask? About as bland as a Saturday afternoon at Ikea.

What's next on the Helmet discog?

Either move forwards to Betty, or backwards to Strap It On. Quality of their releases goes downhill pretty rapidly post-Aftertaste.

That said, don't go expecting much variety - Helmet are effectively a one trick pony, though Betty does have a few more unconventional moments on it.

Random memory about Helmet: First time I ever found out they existed was the same way I found out TOOL and NIN existed, from stickers on car windshields.

As I previously mentioned, it'd been ages since I heard Helmet (other than "Unsung" being played in bars). This is a solid album. To enjoy this you have to realize that at the time the style they played in was relatively new, before all the crappy late 90's bands started twisting and crapping all over it. Anyway, every song on it is at worst solid, with "Unsung" reaching bad ass levels (hence it's continuing popularity). I really dug the bass player's, um, playing.

The bad are that at times the song come dangerously close to being "samey" sounding and the singing gets pretty annoying, but not to the point that you will skip a track.

In the Meantime is a great album. Helmet was a good band like Hellboy said up until Aftertaste.
I need to find a photo of my old jump helmet... I had a Helmet sticker on it as well as a TooL wrench down the middle
