Seems the change in direction on recent Mastodon albums is due to Brent Hinds.
"I never really liked heavy metal in the first place. I came from Alabama playing country music, surf rock, rockabilly, and stuff like that. I just went through a phase in my 20s where I thought it was rebellious to play heavy metal. And then I met Brann [Dailor, Mastodon drummer] and Bill [Kelliher], and they were really, really, really into heavy metal. And ever since then, I’ve been trying to get Mastodon to not be such a heavy metal band, because I f**king hate heavy metal, and I don’t want to be in a heavy metal band."

I wish there were vinyl stores like that in Melbourne.

I'd be in heaven (but broke).

Magma eh?! My best friend worships the ground those proggy troublemakers walk on.

Brann Dailor did an AMA on Reddit today. One of my favorite answers below:
Brent recently said that he wanted to make Mastodon less of a metal orientated band. What do you envision stylistically for the future of Mastodon?

mastodonrocks 11 hours ago
Much more metal
Also:
BRANN! Awesome. I was just setting up a Spotify Mastodon playlist today, as it turns out. I joined the Mastodon fanbase with The Hunter, and have since found Crack The Skye... and others. I have to say, while I've enjoyed all Mastodon's releases, Crack The Skye is STILL my favorite, to date. Any plans to do any more epic (in length) story based tunes similar to The Czar, and The Last Baron? Those two are fuckin inspired, man.

I would really love to get more prog in the future.

in Mastodon related news: Dailor announced that Ben Koller from Converge is going to be dropping some drum tracks on the next album. great news indeed, he's an excellent percussionist. and Converge is a damn good band I might add.

oh shit I'm sorry, my bad. I meant Dave Koller and I didn't put Killer Be Killed in my comment AT ALL. that's what I was referring too. I'm retarded.

I like it, but it also sounds a lot like a lot of other Mastodon songs. "Derivative" would be a cruel word to use, but that's kind of what I felt at first. But it's cool.

I'm looking forward to hearing the entire thing and what will surely be some of the more unique gems on this album.

hahaha

The vocals sound really good though. They definitely keep stepping their game up in that department.

I liked that it sounded a little more like older Mastodon, but the track itself wasn't anything special. It sounds exactly like you'd expect a Mastodon track to sound, and that doesn't bother me a great deal.

Looking forward to the album though.

It's not bad. But they've played that chugging/lurching riff and done that guttural then uplifting vocal thing to death now. Interesting to see if they can develop somewhere interesting or sadly become one of them bands that churn out album after album of samey material.
I'm going with the latter.

Bill warned you all that this was going to be a kind of "dark pop" record haha.
