Not so far, but I'm only 4 tracks in. So far it sounds like pretty vanilla Melvins.

Will post a more complete review when I'm done.

So I finished listening to the album. Disc one is pretty standard Melvins fare - nothing outstanding, it's neither super heavy nor weird. If you've listened to any Melvins album in the last 5 years you've heard variations on this theme. 6/10

The second disc is mostly weird instrumental or noise type tracks. Imagine a Tool ablum full of segues. It's ok for what it is, but I don't see myself coming back to it any time soon. I think they should have mixed the two albums together rather than separating it.

In the end, the "double album" is really just a Melvins album with an extra disc of stuff you'll probably never listen to.

Tres Cabrones is the only good album they've done in 10 years...and the only one in the last 10 years that I own a physical copy of.

Tres Cabrones was alright, I think Freak Puke is probably their strongest since (A) Senile Animal

I'd be pretty cool with the Melvins taking a break and coming back in 3-4 years time with something a bit fresher. The last few albums sound mostly like recycled material to me - The Melvins are usually best when trying something new.

Yep. I LOVE them to death, Buzz included. But for how he bags on bands like Tool for being "lazy" and taking their sweet ass time, and championing his "writing all the time approach," they've become an example of the downside to that approach. Granted, they're still probably at the TOP of the heap in terms of bands who take the "constantly releasing tons of music" approach, don't get me wrong. But a Melvins album/Buzzo riff is veering towards something that's easily parodied at this point. Just variations on the same thing over and over.

NOT hating! I still really, really enjoy most things they release. But it's not that "holy fucking shit!!," bowled over feeling that I had with Senile Animal or some of their more seminal releases.

Thankfully, live will always be where it's at and even at their "worst," Buzz and Dale still bury most other live acts. Can't wait to see them with Spotlights this Fall.

Gotta say I think that Dale Crover solo album was pretty good, and better than the last Melvins one.

Definitely worth checking out if you haven't already.

Never ending stream of Melvins albums continues:
Today the Melvins announced Pinkus Abortion Technician their next album, which will feature both Steven McDonald and Jeff Pinkus on bass simultaneously! The album is scheduled to be released on April 20th via Ipecac Recordings. In addition to that, they've also released the dates for their U.S. tour which begins in late April, check out the tour dates below.

"With our upcoming release, we double your bass player with Steven McDonald and Jeff Pinkus holding down the bottom," explains Dale Crover. "It's an experiment in the low end of the aural spectrum where we asked ourselves, 'Would it work?' 'Could it work??' 'Should it work???' The answers were yes, yes and YES!"

"We've never had two bass players," adds Buzz Osborne. "We've had two drummers and two guitar players, so it makes total sense to now have two bass players. We'll be taking this two-prong bass attack on the road as well which should prove to be interesting. 'Pinkus Abortion Technician' is a radically great record and was a stone groove to record. We drank a lot of coffee and enjoyed each other's company. I like Steven and Jeff a great deal. I admire their bass playing and singing and both of them can grill a mean steak."

"Pinkus Abortion Technician" track listing:

Stop Moving To Florida
Embrace The Rub
Don't Forget To Breathe
Flamboyant Duck
Break Bread
I Want To Hold Your Hand
Prenup Butter
Graveyard
"Stop Moving To Florida" is a medley of the James Gang's "Stop" and BUTTHOLE SURFERS' "Moving To Florida", the band also covers THE BEATLES' "I Want To Hold Your Hand" and BUTTHOLE SURFERS' "Graveyard" on the eight-song release. Pre-orders will be announced soon.

Double bass Melvins I'd pay to see, but I'd prefer double bass, double guitar and double drums, which is obviously their end game

These are all getting to be diminishing returns for me. :/

Hoping for the best of course. But it's gone downhill ever since Steven came on board for my personal taste.
